Best Circular Saw of 2017

The truth is that we should have done this series of in depth reviews of the best circular saws long time ago, because this is really the very best, and simplest tool at a wood worker’s disposal. The circular saw, as a concept, is the lightest type of saw in its class, it is incredibly maneuverable and, with a little bit of imagination, it is also the one tool to replace most of the others. Of course, even when talking about circular saws, there are some tools that are better than most, and that is what we tried to find. We are actually very proud to have gone through a couple of dozen models that we distilled down to this top 10 list. We chose models from every price and weight category so make sure you scroll past the list to our in depth reviews. There you will be able to see why we have chosen one particular model and what its biggest advantages and disadvantages might be.

It would be unfair to call the DeWalt DWE575SB an average circular saw because, in fact it is the best at what it does and that is provide an exceptional level of quality for in an average price range. It is not the best circular saw we are going to feature, but it is the one we would buy. It has a 15 Amp motor, making it as powerful as any table saw, and it is also incredibly light weight. Once you unpack it and put the blade in, it will only weight 8.8 pounds. That also makes it very maneuverable, which should come in handy given that you have a huge 57 degree beveling capacity allowing you to make perfect cuts at any given angle and in any given position. We were also very impressed by the electric brake system and even did a couple of tests to see who well it stacks up the other, more expensive choices out there: it matched them perfectly. Finally, we need to point out that it is not just our opinion you should trust, but the opinion of every one of the 118 buyers who came back to award the DeWalt DWE575SB a 4.8 star rating on Amazon.

2. Hitachi C7ST 15-Amp 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw

If you want to go lower in how much you pay for your table saw, although we would not recommend it, your best choice would be the Hitachi C7ST. It actually is on sale at the moment and that puts it out of its price category and into a lower one. It still has the powerful 15 Amps motor you would need to cut through any type of layered wood and it uses a 24 tooth TCT saw blade. It comes with its own storage or transport box and a setup wrench. The reason why we like it over anything else in its current price range is the fact that it has earned a 4.8 star rating from more than 50 customers, and, in this area of the market, that is still a lot of happy users. It can only do a 45 degree bevel cut, going in as deep as 1-7/8 inch, but it can go as deep as 2-7/16 inches in a 90 degree cut. The final thing you should consider is the fact that the Hitachi C7ST comes with a 5 year warranty, which is a lot of use you could get out of such an inexpensive tool.

3. DEWALT DWS535 7 1/4-Inch Worm Drive Circular Saw

We said we would reveal later on the very best circular saw, and here it is, the DeWalt DWS535. It is a somewhat more expensive, heavier circular saw than the one we started this list with, but it does have its advantages. The most spectacular one is the fact that the DeWalt DWS535 uses a worm drive 15 Amps motor. In case you were wondering the reason why you may be willing to pay a little extra for that worm drive is that it prevents any motion being driven back through the gear system to the motor. That basically means you get a mechanical brake in addition to the electric brake. Another advantage of the DeWalt DWS535 is that it uses a magnesium cast footplate which is harder, more durable, and, at the same time, lighter than the other footplates. It is also well worth mentioning that this is the last 4.8 star Amazon rated circular saw you are going to find on this list so we dearly recommend choosing one of these 3 products.

4. PORTER-CABLE PC15CSLK Circular-Saw with Laser-Guide

Even though we have already given you our top choices, there are certain advantages in choosing one of these other table saws too. The PORTER-CABLE PC15CSLK, for one, uses an actual laser guide to keep you on target, making the dust blower of secondary importance. It too has a 15 Amp motor so we cannot really complain about the power output, but the thing that most displeased us was just how much heavier this table saw is. It is still highly maneuverable, but you will feel the weight difference if you are going to try to lift this or the DeWalt we have talked about in the beginning.

5. Bosch Bare-Tool CCS180BL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Circular Saw

So far we have been talking about corded tools so it is about time we introduced the Bosch Bare-Tool CCS180BL. It is a cordless, 15 Amps circular table saw which, despite the fact that it is battery operated, can cut through just about anything its corded counterparts can. The only real disadvantage of the Bosch Bare-Tool CCS180BL is the fact that it is quite expensive and the fact that it is a bare-tool means you will need to purchase the battery separately, further adding to your costs. However, if you need a tool that you can take with you just about anywhere, there is nothing better you can find than the Bosch Bare-Tool CCS180BL.

There are not that many things that we need to say about a Makita circular saw. Their products have been steadily proving that you do not need to pay a lot of money for a high quality saw of any type. The Makita 5477NB uses a 15 Amps motor so it is just as powerful as any of the tools we have featured here, but the one thing that truly impressed us was the fact that it was designed to be very comfortable when used. We actually rated it as the most comfortable, ergonomic circular saw we have had the chance to work with because of the perfectly positioned handle and the rubber matting that covers it.

We have already talked to you about the Bosch bare tool, which is to say the battery operated circular saw, and we stand by the opinion that they have created a truly outstanding circular saw. However, if you would like to stay true to the DeWalt brand, there is the DEWALT Bare-Tool DC390B to fall back on. It is quite a powerful machine and it is definitely cheaper than the Bosch. You will have to purchase the battery separately, but even then you will come in way below the Bosch price line.

Despite the fact that the Bosch CS5 has a relatively low price, particularly for a Bosch product, and the fact that it is a very well balanced machine, its following is not that big and that is why we have waited so long to mention it. It has earned a 4.5 star rating on Amazon from almost 90 customers, and we believe it could have earned a higher rating than that if the expectations of its buyers would not have been so high. It has a standard 15 Amps motor, but it is a more silent running motor and it has less vibrations that the motors on its competitors.

9. Black & Decker CS1015 15-Amp Circular Saw

The Black & Decker CS1015 is the only table saw that costs less than $100 and that has earned a 4.7 star rating on Amazon. On the one hand we do need to point out that only 20 customers contributed to that rating, but the fact is most people tend to get too much caught up in the Bosch versus DeWalt debate that they tend to forget there are other great companies out there like Black & Decker. The CS1015 has a standard 15 Amp motor and works just as well as any of its much more expensive counterparts. In fact, judging solely on the machine’s technical performance, we would say that this is the best circular saw of 2014 relative to its price.

The last product we are going to feature on our list is the Skil 5480-01. It is the entry level circular saw that you should buy only if you cannot afford one of the other models on our list. It has a small 13 Amps motor, that will get the job done, although it may heat up if you need to cut through particularly hard wood. Still, it is using a sturdy ball bearing motor so we feel confident that it can take the heat and it may surprise you on just how reliable a Skil product can be.
