What to Look for When Purchasing a Portable Table Saw

The concept of a portable table saw is actually split into 2 completely different categories depending on the type of car that you are using or of how far and often you need to move your table saw. We believe that in order for a table saw to be called “portable” it needs to be extremely light and easy to carry around. Of course, there are manufacturers who focus so much on achieving these two goals, that they sacrifice the power of the motor or its speed, and you end up with a very expensive, light machine, that cannot cut through anything. So when we chose the best portable table saw in the extra light category, we made sure that it was actually just as powerful as the very best table saw on the market.

Still, there are people and businesses that can afford a nice pickup truck to get them to and from job sights. As a result, for them, a portable table saw is one that comes with its own stand on wheels. They do not care how bulky that thing is because they can just throw it in the back of the pickup, but they do need it to be the very best. So, our portable table saws reviews are going to focus on these types of units as well and we are going to choose the very best in each category and tell you why we think those are the best.

The Bosch GTS1031 is our favorite portable table saw and we have chosen to start with it because it is compact enough and light enough that you can actually take it with you on the bus from one job location to another. It is equipped with a very powerful 15 amps motor, that can rival in design and power output any table saw motor on the market in 2014. Even more impressive than that is the fact that the Bosch GTS1031’s motor can accelerate to 5000 rotations per minutes which is actually faster than most other regular table saws. In case you were wondering, the RPM or rotations per minute are very important with a table saw because it actually rips through the wood and the faster the blade turns the smoother the cut will be.

The other important thing to consider, in fact the very reason why we think the Bosch GTS1031 is the best table saw on the market in 2014 is it weighs just 40 pounds once you have taken it out of the box and disposed of all the unnecessary bits and pieces. That makes it the lightest, fully functional table saw that we will get the chance to review for you. And it also comes with an optional 14 pounds stand that you will need to purchase separately. As far as the stand is concerned, we are really happy with how stable to reinforced still cage underneath the table saw is. It will allow you to set down the table saw on any surface from the floor to a work bench, saving you from having to carry the stand.

We have already talked about the lightest, most compact table saw on the market, so now we are going to look at what has to be the most maneuverable one. The DeWalt DW744XRS is by no means a small table saw, although there are other units that are even bigger than this one. However, it comes with its own stand with wheels so it is extremely easy to carry it around. The telescoping fence can be retracted so that, when it is completely packed, it can be very easy to push the entire unit around. It has very big, sturdy wheels so you can easily maneuver over uneven terrain. We actually finally decided on the DeWalt DW744XRS as the best portable table saw because, despite the fact that it is quite massive in comparison with the Bosch, for a table saw with wheels it is pretty compact. In fact, you do not even need a pickup truck to carry it around as it will fit the trunk space of most cars.

In terms of power the DeWalt DW744XRS is an absolute delight. It uses the characteristic DeWalt table saw motor, powering the ripping blade at over 3600 RPM. The engine has been rated of 15 amps of power, which means it will cut through even pressure treated lumber. The blade itself is of average quality though, so we strongly encourage you that you change it as soon as it wears out with a much more precise and aerated one. The other thing that we loved about the DeWalt DW744XRS is that its telescopic arm stretches out to over 24 inches, and it is so accurate that you can use it instead of a measuring device for perfectly cut pieces every time. The motor itself uses an internal mechanism that stabilizes the vibrations so the entire unit is very smooth and easy to work with.

Now that we have presented to you our champions on each category, we realized that we had to include the DeWalt DW745 in our portable table saw reviews because it is DeWalt’s answer to the Bosch GTS1031 only it comes at a much more reasonable price. The reason why the DeWalt DW745 is not our favorite is because it is a bit heavier than the Bosch and also a bit slower. It weighs 45 pounds, mainly because it uses that main stream DeWalt table saw motor of 15 Amps of power. However, the DeWalt table saws only spin at 3800 rotations per minute. Still, the power of the motor, coupled with that relatively fast RPM is more than enough to rip through anything from hard wood floors to pressured wood to thin wooden boards. There is basically nothing that stands in the way of the DeWalt DW745 despite its lower RPM and you need to take into consideration the fact that it can be a lot cheaper than the Bosch.

The other reason why we did not go with the DeWalt DW745 as the best portable table saw is that it is 5 pounds heavier than the Bosch. For most people working in construction that really does not make any difference, and we have to go back to that significant price difference. However, if your work has you carrying the table saw by hand for long distances, those 5 pounds will make quite a difference. On the other hand, the thing about weight is that it makes any table saw feel sturdier and actually vibrate less. So, although our ultimate choice is the Bosch GTS1031, we do salute the value of that the DeWalt DW745 brings to the market.

Since we have already talked about the DeWalt answer to the Bosch GTS1031, it is only fair that Bosch’s answer to the DeWalt DW744XRS. It is their big boys toy, the Bosch 4100-09. It obviously is more expensive than the DeWalt, and the truth is that it is not that much better than it so, although we considered it for the best portable table saw in the large category, we finally decided that the DW744XRS is a better choice. However, the Bosch does have its advantages, not the least of which being the fact that it has a Gravity-Rise stand. What that basically means is that it is extremely easy to switch it from its compacted form to its platform stand shape.

The design of the Bosch 4100-09 is quite interesting and we did give it some points for that, but we were very disappointed to see that they used a lesser engine for the 4100-09 than they did for the GTS1031. It still has 15 amps and it can even produce up to 4 hp of torque, but it only spins the blade at 3650 rotations per minutes. It is not that 3650 RPM is not a more than reasonable speed, but if we are going to pay more than we would for the DeWalt, we also expect to get so much more. It is also not that impressive to see that the Bosch 4100-09 only has a fence that goes out to a maximum of 25 inches. Still, we were impressed that the measuring system on this unit is digital and we believe that is a feature most of you are going to love.

Finally we could not conclude our portable table saw reviews without mentioning the Grizzly G0715P hybrid table saw. It is the heaviest and least portable table saw that we would consider for this list, but, as long as you have a large pickup or van, you can still carry it around, and the Grizzly G0715P was actually designed to be carried. Still, with it, you get all the benefits of a cabinet table saw like increased power, specially designed dust collector and an increased reach on the fence. The motor is a 16 amps, 2 hp single phase one, capable of spinning the blade to 3850 RPM. It has a rip capacity of 30 inches to the right and 12 inches to the left. All and all it is not that much more powerful, but it will allow you to make much wider cuts, it is a lot more stable and it is a super clean unit to work with.

Still, before you rush to buy the Grizzly G0715P consider the fact that it is a lot heavier and a lot more expensive than the other table saws we have talked about. It is, indeed, a high end contractor’s machine and you should think twice whether you truly need it or not.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the only thing to consider when looking for the best portable table saw is exactly how light you need the unit to be. If you need to be able to take it with you on the bus, then the Bosch GTS1031 is the better choice because it is extremely light, very powerful and not that much more expensive than the DeWalt DW745. However, if you have the benefit of a pickup truck, than the fact that you can simply roll it around and deploy it wherever you need it, makes the DeWalt DW744XRS. The fact is that these two brands, Bosch and DeWalt are actually dominating the portable saw market of 2014 and they are able to do that because they have been offering for decades the very best quality. As a brand Bosch is a little bit more expensive, but their parts usually outlast anything else their competition can come up with. Still, DeWalt has always stood for quality at affordable prices and you would not go wrong if you chose anyone of their portable table saws.
